Installing your own Fortran compiler
All exercises and programming projects associated with the level 2 programming course can be done using the Plato IDE (integrated development environment) installed on the University’s Networked PC Service – see the first few pages of the course notes for further information. Alternatively, those knowing the operating system Unix (or variants thereof) may use the University’s Academic Unix and Linux services, which offer Fortran 77, Fortran 90 and Fortran 95 compilers.
There possibilities of obtaining your own Fortran compilers, free of any charge, for installation on your own PC. Those known to the course organiser are mentioned below, for information and without any guarantee about their suitability.
Salford offer their FTN95 Personal Edition (including the Plato IDE) at no charge to non-commercial users. Information can be found from Silverfrost.com. Apparently, this personal edition includes all the software bundled in the academic edition, and more, and is essentially identical with the commercial edition.
The Linux version of the Intel Fortran Compiler is also free for non-commercial use.
There is also an open-source implementation of Fortan 95 running under Linux and a few other operating systems.
